01

The long road north.

This is not a point-to-point vacation. It is a long-form road expedition built around slower travel, photography bases and enough uncommitted time to adapt when Alaska changes the plan.

This is the pre-departure plan. Confirmed stays are locked in; planned stops remain subject to reservation availability, weather and road conditions. Sections marked TBD are intentionally being left flexible.

04

Lake Louise

A dedicated alpine photography chapter built around the glacial lake, surrounding peaks and changing light.

05

Icefields Parkway & Jasper

The road itself becomes part of the destination through glaciers, waterfalls, mountain valleys and Jasper National Park.

06

Dawson Creek — Mile 0

The expedition reaches Mile 0 and the historic beginning of the Alaska Highway.

07

Muncho Lake

Into the Northern Rockies for turquoise water, wildlife and remote Alaska Highway landscapes.

08

Liard River Hot Springs

A short northern road day built around the natural hot springs and boreal forest.

09

10

Kluane

A slower scenic chapter through mountains, glaciers, large valleys and the Kluane Lake corridor.

11

Welcome to Alaska

The border crossing and arrival in Tok mark the end of the continental approach and the beginning of the Alaska chapters.

12

Homer

A major Kachemak Bay photography base and the aviation staging point for Katmai and Lake Clark.

13

Katmai National Park

An aircraft-accessed national park objective combining volcanic terrain, wilderness, coastal landscapes and wildlife.

14

Lake Clark National Park

A remote aviation chapter of mountains, glaciers, lakes, rivers and coast with a planned ground visit.

15

Seward

Resurrection Bay, the harbor, July Fourth, Exit Glacier and the gateway to Kenai Fjords.

16

Kenai Fjords National Park

A marine national park chapter built around tidewater glaciers, wildlife, fjords and Exit Glacier.

17

Portage Valley & Whittier

The journey itself becomes the story through Portage Valley, the mountain tunnel and Prince William Sound.

18

Valdez

A long, flexible Prince William Sound photography block centered on waterfalls, glaciers, wildlife and changing coastal weather.

19

Denali National Park

One of the longest protected photography blocks, allowing time for weather, wildlife, visibility and the Alaska Range.

20

Fairbanks

The Interior Alaska recovery and resupply base and the operational gateway to the Arctic aviation chapters.

21

Bettles

A remote Brooks Range gateway and aviation base for the Gates of the Arctic and Kobuk Valley objectives.

22

Gates of the Arctic National Park

Beyond the road: an aircraft-accessed Brooks Range wilderness objective with a planned ground landing if conditions permit.

23

Kobuk Valley National Park

An Arctic aircraft chapter centered on the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes and a remote wilderness landing.

24

McCarthy & Kennicott

The McCarthy Road leads to historic mining country, glaciers, mountains and a remote photography base.

25

Wrangell–St. Elias National Park

Alaska on an immense scale: mountains, glaciers, mining history and multi-day exploration from the McCarthy/Kennicott base.

26

Whitehorse — The Journey Turns South

The core Alaska expedition returns to Whitehorse, where the long journey home begins and the final return route is chosen.

03

6 protected planning windows.

JUN 22–29

Katmai + Lake Clark

Homer serves as the aviation base for attempts to reach both national parks. June 26 is the working primary flight day, with surrounding days deliberately protected for Alaska weather and operator flexibility.

JUL 1–5

Seward + Kenai Fjords

A multi-day Seward block for Resurrection Bay, the Kenai Fjords marine experience, Exit Glacier, photography and July Fourth in town.

JUL 10–12

Whittier + Prince William Sound

A flexible transition through Portage Valley and the Whittier tunnel, with time protected for Prince William Sound and the eventual move toward Valdez.

JUL 23–AUG 3

Denali National Park

An extended Denali block designed around changing mountain visibility, wildlife, photography and enough time to absorb weather delays without rushing the park.

AUG 5–13

Bettles + Gates + Kobuk

Fairbanks and Bettles anchor the Arctic aviation strategy, with multiple days protected for attempts to reach Gates of the Arctic and Kobuk Valley as weather and flight operations allow.

AUG 18–26

McCarthy + Kennicott + Wrangell–St. Elias

A longer remote base for the McCarthy Road, Kennicott historic district, glaciers, mountain landscapes and exploration inside Wrangell–St. Elias National Park.

05

How the trip is being built.

THE CAMPER

The Northern Lite truck camper is both transportation and home base. The route is paced around manageable driving days, service stops and longer photography bases.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY

The expedition is being planned around time rather than checkpoints: longer stays in Homer, Seward, Valdez, Denali and Wrangell–St. Elias create room to wait for weather and light.

THE FLEXIBILITY

Several blocks are intentionally unresolved. Whittier depends on tunnel and cruise timing, Arctic flights depend on weather, and the southbound route will not be chosen until Whitehorse.

06

The plan becomes the story.

This page begins as the pre-departure plan. Once the expedition starts, it will evolve into the actual road journal with photographs, route changes, campground notes and stories from the trip.
